The Meaning of Crystal... A philosophical element.
For centuries the fascinating transparency of crystal has been symbolic of all that is clear, pure and true.
Crystal inspires visions and illusions and raises both mind and spirit to new levels of consciousness. Even the ancient Egyptians looked into the future with a crystal.
In the past, it was believed that crystal originated from ice crystals. Natural quartz crystal – rock crystal – was one of the most sought after possessions during the Renaissance. The mysterious material was cut to create exquisite objects which were set in gold and studded with precious stones. It became an unparalleled status symbol.
During the 16th Century a colorless glass was produced in Venice, which was called Cristallo, after rock crystal. However, it was not until the 17th Century that the real breakthrough occurred with the invention, in England, of lead crystal. This sparkling material had mystical clarity and purity and at the same time distinguished itself through its spectacular fire, brilliance and powerful prismatic characteristics.
Crystal is endowed with deep meaning and an extensive history, which is currently being rediscovered and reinterpreted as a central element of jewelry design.
The recently rekindled interest in the meaning of crystal goes hand in hand with a new predilection for amulets, talismans and symbolic pieces of jewelry. Both these tendencies are related to a social mega trend which goes back to the longing to protect oneself from an unpredictable world. Amulets have been worn for thousands of years as mediators between man and nature. In the context of this tradition crystal, with its powerful symbolism of truth, light, energy and power, still fulfils a fundamental human need.
